VISIONAI · FOUNDING FAMILIES

Parent Guide

Thank you for being one of the first 50 families. This is a hand-assembled engineering prototype — it isn't what the production unit will be. Right now its job is to help us learn exactly when a child should be nudged, and when they should be left alone.

Five minutes to read. Section 1 is a one-off on the day the box arrives; after that, if you remember only two things, make them section 3 (charge daily) and section 4 (open the app once a day).

First, plainly: it does not take pictures or record sound

There is no camera and no microphone in this device. It has three sensors: how bright the room is, how far away the nearest thing in front is, and how the clip is tilted and moving. It does not know what your child is looking at — only how close, how bright, and whether they're moving.

01Setting up, once

On the day the box arrives — about ten minutes.

  1. Install the app. iPhone: install TestFlight from the App Store first, then open testflight.apple.com/join/VAPzN8Ye to install VisionAI. Android: open expo.dev/artifacts/eas/4wQqubPNHK7RsoKuAk8COotNJWB6yCwaXfU6RJv5-SA.apk in the phone's browser to download and install it (Android will ask you to allow installing from an unknown source).
  2. Create an account with your email. This account is your family's door to the data — keep the login safe.
  3. Read the consent form and tick each item. Three are required, one is optional; declining the optional one changes nothing.
  4. Add your child — a nickname is fine, plus their age.
  5. Connect the device. Hold it near the phone and follow the prompts in the app.
  6. Check it worked: the home screen shows a battery level.
  7. Expect the first "moment" prompt the same day, asking what your child was just doing — see section 6.
Use one phone to start with. Data follows the account, so two phones each signed in separately is an easy way to confuse yourself.

02Wearing it

Once each morning, about ten seconds.

  1. The device goes on the outside of the shirt, high on the chest just below the collarbone.
  2. The end with the small window faces up (the USB-C port ends up at the top left). The window must face straight ahead and not be covered by a collar.
  3. Bring the magnet clip up from inside the shirt and let it drop fully into the rectangular frame on the back of the device — seated in the frame is what stops it sliding down.
Caution: the magnets are strong. Mind your fingers, and keep them away from small children. If a magnet is ever swallowed, seek medical care immediately — two magnets can attract through the wall of the gut, which is an emergency; do not wait for them to pass. Anyone with a pacemaker or similar implanted device should not wear this against the body.
Wear it where you can keep an eye on it — please don't send it to school yet. These are hand-built, and there are only fifty of them; losing one, or having a classmate walk off with it, is a real risk, and a buzz in class is a distraction. After school, weekends and outings are exactly the hours this batch should be recording.

03Charging: once a day

PortUSB-C on the upper-left edge; any standard USB-C cable
Full chargeAbout 1.5–2 hours
RuntimeAbout 2 days (measured: 48 hours). Charge daily rather than stretching it
Power switchNone. It runs whenever it has charge — unplug and wear
There is no indicator light on the device — you can't tell charging from charged by looking. Check the battery level in the app, on the home screen. Make it a nightly routine — bath time to bedtime — and unplug once it is full (about 1.5–2 hours).
Charge while someone is home, on a table or other non-flammable surface. Do not charge overnight, in a bed, or under bedding. This is a hand-built prototype with a 3D-printed shell and a lithium battery inside.

04Open the app once a day

If you do only one thing from this guide, do this one.

Your child carries no phone; the device records on its own. But data only transfers when the app is open and your phone is within about a metre of your child.

The device holds roughly one day of recording. Once full, it overwrites the oldest data. So:

Open the app once a day and stay in it for a minute or two

Before school or after dinner both work, as long as your child is nearby. It connects and syncs automatically — you don't need to press anything.

If the app isn't opened for two days running, those two days are gone permanently.

05What the buzzes mean

It only buzzes when it should. Meals and walks don't trigger it.

The device works out what your child is doing first. It only buzzes during close-up activities — reading, homework, tablet or phone. Eating, walking, travelling in a car, watching TV and outdoor play never trigger it.

BuzzMeaning
3 shortToo close — held under 20 cm for more than a minute
2 shortToo dim — close-up work in low light for over two minutes
1 shortTime to look up — 30 minutes of continuous close work

The buzz is gentle — a cue for the child to adjust or take a break, not an alarm. If it feels too frequent, or misses moments you'd expect it to catch, please tell us. Calibrating that is part of what this batch is for.

Plainly: it still gets things wrong

The model that decides what your child is doing was trained on data from one adult. So in the first weeks expect some missed moments and some buzzes that shouldn't have happened, and treat figures like daily outdoor time as rough.

That isn't a fault — it is why we asked you to join: every "moment" you answer teaches it more about children. When something is clearly wrong, tell us.

06The app will ask what your child was just doing

This is the single most valuable thing you can give us.

A few times a day the app asks what your child was doing during a specific two-minute window. Your answer is what teaches the device that "this pattern = this activity" — it's how it learns to tell homework from dinner.

When to answerAs soon as you can. Past 20 minutes, memory isn't reliable
If you don't knowTap "Not sure". That is a genuinely useful answer — a guess actively hurts
Got it wrongTap the entry to change or remove it
How oftenAt most 6 a day, at least 45 minutes apart
Child wasn't with youTap "Not sure". If you didn't see it, don't guess — this will happen often, and that's fine
Who answersWhoever was watching. If a grandparent or sitter had them, ask before answering — but past 20 minutes accuracy drops

07The device is on loan — it comes back after 30 days

This prototype belongs to us; it isn't being sold to you.

The CA$20 is a depositNot a payment for the device. Refunded once the prototype is back with us
How long you keep it30 days. We'll send return instructions at the end — we pay the shipping
In week 3We'll ask whether you want to pre-order the production unit. Saying no is completely fine and changes nothing about our support during the 30 days
If you do pre-orderThe deposit becomes part of the order: CA$119 more, CA$139 in total (retail will be CA$199). We ship the production unit when it's ready
Stopping earlyAny time, no reason needed. Send the prototype back and the deposit is refunded

08If something goes wrong

What you seeTry this first
Device seems deadCharge it. There's no switch and no light — a flat battery is completely silent
App can't find itCheck three things: Bluetooth on, device within a metre, app open in the foreground
Data isn't updatingOpen the app and stay on the home screen for 1–2 minutes
It slides downCheck the magnet clip is seated inside the frame, not just stuck to the flat back
It got wetStop using it, don't charge it, and contact us
Your child dislikes itTake it off. This is voluntary — pause or stop any time
The app offers a firmware updateKeep the device next to the phone and leave them alone for about 4 minutes
The app reports a sensor faultContact us. Readings won't be trustworthy — don't keep collecting with it
Not waterproof. Remove for bathing, swimming and heavy rain. The case is a 3D-printed prototype — if it cracks, contact us for a replacement rather than opening it. There is a lithium battery inside.

09Reach us any time

Any question, any annoyance, or if you want to stop partway — contact us any time, no reason needed, no hard feelings. Your complaints are worth as much to us as the data.
